A problem that has always existed has become more prevalent. The problem is that many senior dogs are turned over to animal shelters simply because they are no longer young. We feel it is a shame that so many senior dogs who still have so much love, affection, and companionship to offer are abandoned simply because of their age. Most rescues simply cannot accept senior canines because of their slim chance for adoption. Rescues have a network of foster homes that act as a stopover between the shelter and adopting home. When a foster home does take an older dog in their home to live out their life some find they are no longer able to assist rescue because of lack of space for other collies. We would like to implement a program tentatively called "Senior Canines for Senior Citizens". This is only the beginning of an idea (everything has to start somewhere), but we feel it would be wonderful to put two groups together who could so thoroughly enjoy each other. There are many studies supporting both the emotional and physical benefits of having an animal to love and care for. Because of various lifestyle changes, many senior citizens find themselves more alone than they would like to be and can offer a senior canine the love the deserve. Should you, or someone you know, wish to share their home with a senior collie please give us a call at 404-633-2337. For those who might have limited financial resources, Collie Rescue could provide food and annual shots for any senior adopted through them.
